God is Creator. God is Soverign and He is Lord.
Last night I was brought to read, Mark 12:41-44
“And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. May rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he caled his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contribute out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on”
And the fear of the Lord hit me. How can I think I could hold onto any aspect of my life? How am I able to only give the Lord that which I have in abundance so I would still have some of my life for myself? For so often we offer to the Lord the things in our life that we can easily have back or gain back ourselves. We offer to Him that which doesn’t really take away from our way of life. However Jesus did not hold back, He gave all of Himself to Father God so that His love, majesty and grace could be seen and given to all. Why are you holding back offering it all? Who has your heart? What has your heart?
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing. Psalm 16:2
I see it as the rich are those who see God as apart of their lives, while the widow saw Him as all of her life. The rich see offering as something they should do, while the widow saw it as the only thing to do-to offer all of herself, her life, her heart, her comfort; all because of love. For we do not go to that extent of laying it all down if we do not love. We are not willing to go beyond our comfort for those we don’t love. I believe she realized that all she had was nothing compared to His love, to the exceeding riches of His love and grace. She realized her brokeness apart from Him. She realized that He was worthy of all she had because she had faith that He was all she needed. For we can offer a lot to the Lord, we can place on the alter many aspects of our lives, things in our lives, pieces of our hearts-maybe hoping that even by placing the “big” things to us will seem enough to God. But even our “biggest” riches here on earth are nothing compared to His. For He is not looking for our riches but our hearts. He is seeking our lives not merely our things. He desires our lives to be wholly yeilded to Him, instead of fearfully offering the “big” pieces of our lives, hoping that we won’t have to give it all to Him. But then by thinking that, we do not love God but merely see Him as something we must do to be saved. We miss a life full of love with God because we fear who we think He is and what He may ask from us. But truly when we begin to love Him and come to know Him, we realize He is the only valuable thing we need to survive. By placing down that which we see as important, all He is looking at is our hearts. For all those things are nothing compared to all of you. For it doesn’t matter if we have little to give, He can use every aspect of our lives if we are willing to lay it down for Him. Offering ourselves as a living sacrifice so that His glory can be seen through us.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” Matthew 5:3
For when we realize our brokeness apart from His grace. When we come to see that our lives are simply meaningless apart from Him and that we ourselves can do no good thing apart from Him. That is when we will be willing to lay down all that we are, all that we have so that He can use us for His beauty. Just as the widow saw Him as all she needed, offering up all she had for Him out of love. May you too seek Him, for when we are emptied of all self, that is when we can experience Him for all that He is. Love knows no bounds. Love knows the desperate need for Jesus, for without Him, we have nothing-but with Him, we have it all. Do you believe?
“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ” Philippians 3:8
Abba I thank you for your abounding love and mercy. For you are the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Forgive us for holding onto areas of our lives and giving you only pieces. Forgive us for trying to save our lives for ourselves instead of allowing you to hold our life fully in your hands. I ask that just as the widow laid all she had, offering all of herself upto you. That we too may do the same. Offering ourselves as living sacrifices, so that your will may be done through us. Holy Spirit may you search our hearts and reveal all that we are trying to keep for ourselves. You are all we need oh Precious Saviour. Have your way, in the name of Jesus, amen!
With Your counsel You will guide me,
And afterward receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but You?
And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
For, behold, those who are far from You will perish;
You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You.
But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
That I may tell of all Your works. Psalm 73:24-28
